Set up GA4 with Google Tag Manager

Install the Google tag for GA4, verify data flow, and connect GA4 to PingAura.

Use Google Tag Manager (GTM) to deploy the Google tag for Google Analytics 4 (GA4) without editing code.

Before you begin

  • A GA4 account and property.
  • A web data stream for your website.
  • Access to the GTM container for the site.
  • The GTM container is installed on your site (or you can add it).
  • GA4 Admin access.

Step-by-step setup

  1. Open GTM and select your web container.
  2. Create a new Tag and choose Google tag as the tag type.
  3. Enter your GA4 Measurement ID (G-XXXXXXX) for the Google tag.
  4. Add a trigger for All Pages.
  5. Save the tag.

Note: The Google tag is the current GA4 tag type in GTM and replaces the older GA4 configuration tag. If you are migrating, remove the old GA4 configuration tag to avoid double firing.

Optional configuration

These are advanced options and safe to skip unless you need them:

  • Add configuration parameters if you need custom settings.
  • Add event settings for shared parameters like currency.
  • Set up user properties if you need audience-level attributes.

Verify and publish

  1. Click Preview to open Tag Assistant and connect it to your site.
  2. Confirm the Google tag fires and events appear in GA4 Realtime.
  3. Click Submit in GTM and publish the container version.

Connect GA4 to PingAura

  1. In PingAura, go to AI Traffic > Connections.
  2. Make sure you have GA4 Admin access for the property you want to connect.
  3. Authorize Google Analytics 4 and select the property that tracks your primary site.
  4. Map your canonical domain (the preferred HTTPS + host, e.g. https://example.com) so sessions, citations, and traffic align to the same URLs. If you manage multiple domains, map each one.

Data Latency

  • GA4 is typically 24 hours behind.
