AI Overview

An AI Overview is Google Search's AI-generated answer panel, a block of synthesised text drawn from several sources and displayed above the usual list of blue links. Google rolled it out globally after testing it under the name Search Generative Experience, or SGE, and it now appears on a large share of everyday queries.

For a marketing buyer the stakes are direct. When an AI Overview sits above the fold, it can answer the searcher's question well enough that nobody scrolls down to the organic results underneath. Google's own newer Search Console reporting and independent SEO analysts both point the same way: pages ranking below an AI Overview see fewer clicks than they would on a plain results page, even at position one. If your brand is not named or cited inside the panel, the click is lost before any ranking battle even starts.

Under the surface, Google builds each overview from its own web index. A Gemini model reads crawled and indexed pages, breaks the user's question into several related sub-queries, pulls candidate passages that answer each one, and stitches the results into a short generated summary with source links attached below the text. A page that states its answer plainly near the top, with clear headings and marked-up facts, gives the model a passage it can quote without rewriting it. A page that buries its answer under three paragraphs of throat-clearing gets paraphrased loosely or skipped.

Take a concrete case. Search "best budgeting apps for couples" and Google typically returns a four- or five-sentence summary naming two or three named apps, with a short row of citation links beneath it pointing to sites such as NerdWallet and Investopedia. The exact source count moves with the topic, but overviews commonly cite somewhere between three and eight links per query. None of those cited sites paid for placement; inclusion depends entirely on how easily their content can be extracted and trusted.

People confuse AI Overviews with featured snippets and with AI Mode constantly, but the three are genuinely different surfaces. A featured snippet is a single excerpt lifted verbatim from one page and boxed at the top of results; it predates generative AI and involves no synthesis at all. An AI Overview blends several sources into freshly generated text and can appear above, beside, or in place of a featured snippet on the same results page. AI Mode is different again: a separate, opt-in conversational search tab where the user asks follow-up questions in a chat interface, and Google runs a much deeper multi-turn retrieval across many more sub-queries than a single overview needs. An AI Overview stays inside the ordinary results page. AI Mode replaces that page entirely with a chat.
