Set up Bing Webmaster Tools

Verify your site with Bing and connect Bing Webmaster Tools to PingAura to track AI Performance metrics.

Bing Webmaster Tools provides the AI Performance report, which shows how often your content is cited in Bing search summaries and Microsoft Copilot. Connect it to PingAura to track citations, monitor trends, and align AI visibility with your overall content strategy.

Before you begin

  • A Microsoft account (same as Outlook, Hotmail, or Xbox account).
  • Access to your domain or the ability to verify ownership via DNS, HTML file, or meta tag.
  • Your preferred canonical domain (HTTPS + host).

Step-by-step setup

  1. Go to Bing Webmaster Tools and sign in with your Microsoft account.
  2. Click Add a site and enter your domain URL.
  3. Verify ownership using one of these methods:
    • DNS TXT record — Add a TXT record to your domain's DNS settings (recommended for domain-level access).
    • HTML file upload — Download a verification file and upload it to your root directory.
    • Meta tag — Add a meta tag to your homepage's <head> section.
  4. Click Verify and wait for confirmation (usually instant to a few minutes).
  5. After verification, explore the core reports:
    • AI Performance — Track citations, cited pages, and grounding queries.
    • Coverage — See which pages Bing has indexed.
    • Traffic — View clicks, impressions, and click-through rates.

Understanding AI Performance data

The AI Performance report shows:

  • Citations — How many times your content was used as a source in AI-generated answers.
  • Cited Pages — Which specific pages appeared in AI answers.
  • Grounding Queries — The types of questions and intent that led AI to select your content.
  • Trends — Week-over-week changes in your AI visibility.

Note: This report shows citations and visibility, not clicks or conversions. Use PingAura to connect AI citations to business outcomes.

Connect Bing Webmaster Tools to PingAura

  1. In PingAura, open the AI Traffic page for your domain and go to the Bing tab.
  2. Make sure you have Admin access in Bing Webmaster Tools for the site you want to connect.
  3. Click Connect Bing Account and authorize Bing Webmaster Tools.
  4. After authorization, select the verified site that matches your domain.
  5. PingAura will start pulling AI Performance metrics automatically.

Data Latency

  • Bing AI Performance data typically updates with a 7-day lag (Bing reports data through the previous Saturday).
  • Your first data import may take up to 24 hours.

Troubleshooting

"Site not found" — Make sure you selected the exact domain you verified in Bing Webmaster Tools. Subdomains, protocols (http vs https), and www variants are treated as separate sites.

"No data available" — Bing only reports AI Performance for sites that have received citations in the past 28 days. If this is a new site, check back after a few weeks.

Permission denied — Verify you have Admin access to the site in Bing Webmaster Tools. Co-administrators should also work, but verify your role.
